After a long year Social finals were written today and the class average for 8-1 was 65% and 68% for 8-2. Thank you to all the students who put in a great effort this year!
Our awards ceremony in on Thursday and report cards will be going home that day too.

Thursday's class
Today we worked on trading cards. Each student was to complete 6 of them for any important person in their text book. We played a review game at the end of class.

Wednesday's Class
Today in class students continued working on their list of People of Importance. When they were finished they were to get the trading cards handout and choose 6 people from the Renaissance, Japan and/or Aztecs and Spanish to design trading cards for.
I informed them that I will be collecting text books on Friday. Students wanting to sign them out can do so on a nightly basis and return them the following day for studying.

Monday's Class
Today we corrected Chapter 9 questions and Fill in the Blanks that were assigned last week. There is a Chapter 9 Quiz tomorrow on these two sheets. After that we began writing down all the people of importance from our textbook and breaking them into three categories of Renaissance, Japan, and Aztecs & Spanish on a sheet of lined paper. We will continue working on this after the quiz tomorrow. This is the start of our final exam review.

Thursday's Class
I was away this Tuesday at a workshop. Wednesday I gave students interim reports to tell them what their mark is in class. I asked them to get signed by parents and return to me. Students studied for their test yesterday which we had today in class. Tomorrow we will be marking the test. Next week we will begin reviewing for the final.

Monday is an organizational day for teachers so there is no school for students.
Our support staff in the building is going on a sporadic strike; meaning they will go out on strike for a couple days and return on Thursday. This will begin next Tuesday and Wednesday. This means that students will not have access to cafeteria food and will need to bring their lunch. If your son or daughter is going to be away from Social-homeroom 8-2 please call 777-7770 ext 2020 to inform myself or send a note ahead of time if possible or when they return and turn it into their homeroom teacher.

Thursday's Class
Today in class the Moctezuma and Cortes cartoon are due today. We worked on chapter 9 questions from pages 303 to 315. We will be correcting these tomorrow in class.
There will be a test at the end of next week, probably Thursday on all of the Aztec Unit. We have a review class next Wednesday.

Monday's class
Students were told at the beginning on class they had until tomorrow to hand in their Compare and Contrast booklets.
Today everyone worked on a six panel cartoon explaining the events of Cortes and Moctezuma I meeting and the final fall of the Aztecs. We will continue to work on these tomorrow in class. Wednesday will the our annual sports day so there will be no social classes depending on the weather.

Friday's Class
Today we took notes from the LCD projector on the Compare and Contrast chart. I've told 8-2 that theirs will be on due on Monday and 8-1's will be due on Tuesday because of the fire drill that happened in class today. They are permitted to work with other students and share information to finish this booklet.

Wednesday's class
Today both 8-1 and 8-2 attended a drumming class with David Thiaw; please visit his website for further information at http://www.davidthiaw.com/. David Thaiw has been coming to our school for the last several years to work with our grade 8 students. Not only do they learn about drumming but they also cover a wide variety of global events which are related back to the drumming. This is a wonderful opportunity for grade 8 students this week to attend on a daily basis with Mr. Thiaw. On Friday we will be having a presentation in the gym last period of the day.

For this project students are to make a poster on one aspect of Aztec life. They may work in groups up to 3 people. Some suggestions for posters are:

Monday's class
Today in class we are continuing on our Aztec Book project. Students should be completing 2 books per class.
Next week we have special guest David Thiaw (pronounced Chow) coming to our school to drum, dance, and speak about his worldviews to our grade 8 students. They will be attending his drumming sessions once a day for all of next week. On Friday May 2 we will have a special presentation by David and students will demonstrate what they learned all week. Poor behavior will not be tolerated and students who cannot behave will have alternate assignments on respect provided to them.

Today we continued working on the Aztec booklet project. I have had students request to take their booklet home to work on but I am saying no because I don't want them getting lost and not returned. I have told students if they do want to work on the booklet to download the pages they want to work on from my previous posting. If this is still a concern please email me and I can email you the attachment if you cannot download it. I'm estimating that we will still be working on this project into the middle of next week.

Tuesday's Class
Today students watched the film Engineering an Empire- The Aztecs. It is available at the Calgary Public Library under call letters DVD 909 ENG v.1 They had to write down 20 points from the video and answer the question: How would Mexico be different today if the Spanish had not arrived? This was taken in at the end of class today.

Monday's class

We watched a Dateline NBC newsclip today on lock down procedures as we should be have a practice lock down in April. Students wrote in their response journals about what they watched and we discussed as a class.

Friday's week in review
Interim Reports were sent home with students today. I've asked that they be signed and returned with the student Monday March 3, 2008.
Students had this week to make up any late assignments so I've told them they still have the month of March to bring up their marks for the next report card which is April 18. This is a temporary report card which only tells them their mark as of today in class.

Wednesday update
I have to apologize for not getting work up sooner but I was away sick yesterday.
Yesterday I assigned Chapter 5 fill in the blanks handout. Here is the link if you are missing the assignment. Students spent time finishing this today. It is due tomorrow.

Chapter 5 Article Assignment

This is the assignment that was given yesterday. Students worked on this today. There will be a small amount of time to work on it tomorrow and it will be due next week. **hint, hint-there may be a quiz tomorrow, study the Meiji PowerPoint.
Some students were struggling with this so I've provided the following alternate assignment if they are having trouble:
Answer the following 5W questions for 2 of the 4 countries or continent on Russia, Europe, China or USA using pages 166-171 of your text book. Answer in full sentences please:
1) Who was the outside influence?
2) What were the issues that created the crisis?
3) How did Japan respond?
4) Where was the crisis or influence taking place?
5) When did the events take place? Was it over a year or several years?
6) Why did the influence or crisis occur?

Chapter 5 Article Assignment
Today in class we finished slides 9-15 of the Meiji PowerPoint on Japan. Students were then given the article assignment based on the slides. No due date has yet been given as students have just begun and will continue working on it tomorrow.

Wednesday's class
Today in class we read page 165 together and students worked with their table groups to answer questions 1 and 2 on the page, questions were due in class.
We then viewed the PowerPoint on Meiji Japan from slides 1-8 and took notes.
We finished class by writing in our journals.
*PLEASE NOTE: Tomorrow is a half day as interviews are in the afternoon and evening. We will finish the PowerPoint and Ch 5 Vocabulary is due. Please call the school at 777-7770 if you would like to arrange an interview time.

Chapter 5 Vocabulary
Today we defined the 11 words from Chapter 5. Students were to write an example of the word and a non-example. This is what it should have looked like:
1) Consensus: a decision reached through common agreement.
Example: The class voted on whether marks should be deducted from late assignment and agreed they should not.
Non-Example: People could not come to an agreement.
This assignment is due this Thursday.

Week in Review
Today we marked the Comic Current Event in class. Due to students being absent this week it was decided through a vote that students who did not have their work finished could hand it in on Tuesday. There is no school for students on Monday so it will be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday.

Comic Current Event
For this project students were to find an article in the newspaper and answer the 5 W's for the assignment; who, what, where, when, and why. They were then to create a 6-8 panel comic strip which recreates the article. The assignment is due on Friday February 1. It will be evaluated on a rubric that students have created in class.
